This magical tale of fairy tales and a kid's imagination creates one of the best films that I've seen written specifically for film. What do I mean by that? Well most films of this genre and based on children's fantasy books such as Chronicles or LOTR. But Guillermo del Toro a fine director and screenwriter produces what I think is his best work in Pan's Labyrinth.
The movie is about a young girl, Ofelia (Ivana Baquero), whose mother marries a captain of the spanish army after the civil war. They move into a small base camp in a cottage where rebels have fled. Ofelia meets a strange creature and learns that she is actually a princess in another world but in order to go to that world she must successfully pass three tests.
The film is definitly a fairy tale for adults. The pain and cruelty of war isn't dumbed down in this R rated film. A great film that is definitely a must see though.
Pan's Labyrinth gets a 9 out of 10.
