District 9 is probably one of the most unique films this summer. With a small viral marketing campaign with some TV commercial promotions, I have to say it did peek my interest. Some of the commercials seemed a bit corny but anything to do with aliens has the potential to turn out that way.
The movie is about aliens that have come to earth but are put and kept in a slum in south africa. The aliens have been there for 20 years now. We follow an employee of a defense contractor that is put in charge of overseeing the relocation of the aliens to a concentration camp.
The film is very different from what you typically see. Camera work seems more of a documentary type feel. We are in a slum in south africa and not filmed in LA. No name actors and no name director. The only name behind it is Peter Jackson who just helped fund the project.
I have to say that the uniqueness of the movie did keep me interested enough to overlook some of the cheesy moments of the aliens. The one thing i felt missing was the connection to the main character. I didn't care what happened to him. There were moments during the film that I actually didn't mind seeing him get killed if that happened. But overall this was a good movie.
District 9 gets a 6 out of 10.
